I am a qualified therapist with many years experience working in mental health and psychological therapies. It is a priority for me to provide face-to-face therapy in a safe and reassuring environment. I work with adults of all ages and younger people from the age of 13. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a recognised talking therapy for helping people who suffer with depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem and other perceptions, which may be causing distress. It offers a flexible yet focused approach in challenging negative thinking as well as adopting effective coping strategies leading to improved confidence. The aim of CBT is to enable you to recognise you have the resources and potential to overcome your difficulties. In addition you will be equipped with various tools to help prevent any future relapses, essentially enabling you to become your own therapist.
CBT is concerned with achieving specific results within a defined time period. This can help ensure that it is cost effective and it is also well supported by research evidence. In addition it is a therapy which is fully collaborative, ensuring you are continuously involved in your own treatment. In this sense for the client it is very much a “doing therapy”. / Between appointments you might be asked to record your experiences, to test out beliefs and try out new skills. I offer my clients a summary of each session, which I email to them – this can be helpful to refer to after the appointment.
CBT differs from counselling in that it is more concerned with what is keeping the problem going at the moment rather than what’s happened in the past. As well as CBT I have also completed training in EMDR (Eye movement desensitisation reprocessing) for trauma. This a recognised treatment for PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder). PTSD is a psychological condition, which affects some people after traumatic events such as accidents and life threatening situations but also abusive relationships, bullying, childhood traumas and loss. This treatment can be effective in healing the traumatic or distressing memories, which may have become stuck for the individual and could be causing major difficulties in the present.
I offer flexible appointment times, generally without having to wait for more than a few days. You can refer yourself and the first meeting will give us an opportunity to clarify what you would like to work on and what your expected goals might be. My consulting room in the Buttermarket is comfortable, easily accessible and with available parking immediately outside the premises.
